›› History of First United Methodist Church
John Wesley and his brother Charles, who were members of the Church of England, became discontented with the participation of the church in meeting the spiritual needs of the masses and started religious societies which began to be called "Methodists" by those that participated in their meetings.

The rapid growth of these societies in the "Colonies" later were organized into the Methodist Episcopal Church. The first service in North Carolina, carried out by a regular preacher, was carried out in Currituck in 1772 by Joseph Pilmoor.

The Society in New York felt the need of an experienced preacher and appealed to Mr. Wesley. At the Conference of the Society in Leeds, England the decision was made to send

›› Worship Services
Join us for our Contemporary Service at 8:30 AM each Sunday in our Asbury Room downstairs where our Praise Band leads the assembled worshipers in a participatory informal service.  Dress and activities are more in keeping with a young family setting where dress is usually informal and families with small children are usually sitting and worshiping together.  Many bring in a cup of coffee or a cookie for one of the children.  This is a growing service in the building and we welcome additional instruments or singers.  Let our Music Director know what you would like and what you would like to do.
Come inside for our 11:00 am Traditional Service and be surprised at the spiritual message from the pulpit and the

›› Sunday School Classes

It has been said that the primary objective of Worship Services is to worship God and the primary purpose of Sunday School is to learn more about God and the Bible.  Sunday School also offers an oportunity for fellowship with people who have similar interests in Christian Endeavors.  My family has found that when moving to a new community, the best way to become introduced to others in the Christian Community is to go to Sunday School.

We have Sunday School Classes starting at the preschool Level and covering every age level and interest subject.

›› Antique Window Serves to Revitalize outreach Program
An ancient farmer has brought new life to First United Methodist Church’s Outreach Program. This farmer is depicted in a centuries old stained glass window, entitled the Sower, which has found a new home in the Narthex of First United Methodist Church on the corner of Church and Road Streets.
Jesus said that when a farmer sows grain it lands onto perhaps four different types of soil.  The first is packed hard making it difficult for the grain to gain roots; another has shallow soil above rocks where some initial rooting takes place but soon the roots hit the rocks and nourishment cannot take place and the plant dries up; a third is filled with fast growing weed seeds which outgrow

›› Halleluiah! ReVision and Revival at Church

A new spirit is alive at FUMC.  Many protestant churches have lost attendance and growth during the last several decades.  We did also but have awoken and are listening to what God's Will is for this church, this community and this country.  As one of our 90+ year old members said, "we were lazily lethargic" but are now alive.
We now have growing attendance at both our Contemporary Service at 8:30 AM and at out Traditional Service at 11:00 AM.  We have an active Praise Band at the Contemporary Service and a growing, joyful, fun-loving Chancel Choir for the Traditional Service.  If you think that you might enjoy making a joyful noise we would love to have you join
