Lessons from GideonThe story of Gideon is found in Judges 6-7. It is an account of how Gideon led an overmatched force of Israelites against the superior Midianite army. On one hand, this story is a powerful commentary of how God’s grace and power can turn the tide of any battle we face. Ultimately, we need not fight life’s battles on our own. If we trust in God and if we rely on God’s grace, we can be victorious no matter what the odds. Beyond this general lesson, there is an important teaching about how God views each of us. When God first spoke to Gideon, Gideon complained, “My clan is the weakest in Manasseh and I am the least in my family.” In other words, Gideon was saying “I’m a nobody. I’m not the type of person who can lead the people of Israel to victory.” Earlier, God had told Gideon, “Go in the strength you have, and save Israel out of Midian’s hand. Am I not sending you?” What is interesting about God’s word to Gideon is that God saw potential in Gideon that he had not recognized in himself. This is important! Too often we view ourselves too harshly and according to the standards of the world. We think we are not big enough, fast enough, smart enough, rich enough, or powerful enough to make a difference. However, God has created each of us and gifted us in special ways. With God’s help, we can make a difference if we dare to believe God is with us and God will help us. As the apostle said, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13).
