By the time our crew started working on refurbishing this house, it required more  destruction than construction and windows were one such example.  Many of the windows were broken, the

Outreach Celebration and Recruitment Sunday

Come and join us on August 5th as we celebrate the progress made in our Outreach Ministry goals at First United Methodist Church.  Our 11:00 AM Service will be followed by a lunch at which time we will recognize the many volunteers who have given of their time and efforts to better our community and its people.

A large portion of part of First United Methodist Church’s current and future ministry deals with “Outreach” or Local Missions.  We try to follow, as listed in Mark 6: 29-30, the two commandments that Jesus told the Pharisee were the most important:

Mark 29: 'Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30Love the Lord your God with all your heart

Riverside Community Housing Project

In February of 2007, the FUMC Outreach Committee investigated a situation in the Riverside neighborhood.  Several years ago Mrs. Georgia Stabell and her husband purchased an old house on Morgan St. near the home of one of their daughters.  Their intent was to refurbish it so that they would be near their daughter and five grandchildren. Due to a series of unfortunate events including the death of her husband, a fire and other physical and financial setbacks, she is unable to complete the renovation to the extent that the house will be habitable.  The Outreach Committee saw this as an excellent opportunity to serve.  Once the project was investigated and agreed to by Mrs Stabell's family, FUMC's Outreach Committee began to plan the project

Unseen and Unwelcome Guests

As soon as the work volunteers got underway it was apparent that unwelcome guests had preceded them. The surface damage in the initial inspection only defined part of the needed reconstruction.   As Soon as we realized that the previous visitors had both been properly filled and gone elsewhere the changes that they had performed were examined and work undertaken to rebuild the structural supports such as sills, etc., which for the most part were now missing.

This was one of the first jobs undertaken and as you can see from this picture, good construction work is not always gender dependent.

Outreach Mission, Approach, & Church Partners

Butch Carter, the chair of FUMC's Outreach Committee provides the following statement:  "The mission for this project is not just to help a neighbor in need but to become  a leader in community outreac h and set an example for other churches and organizations to follow our lead, and we have been successful in that  effort. Both Cann Memorial Presbyterian Church and Christ Episcopal Church have been partners with us in this effort.

Seventh Year of Tutoring At Sheep Harney

In 1998 we began to seek ways in which we could increase our Christian help to the neighbors of First United Methodist Church.  After considerable investigation it seemed to us that the best road toward helping the community according to the teachings of Jesus would be to work with small children.  Looking at the posible roads near us that we could take we arrived at one of the roads less traveled and visited Sheep Harney Elementary School in the summer of the year 2000.                        Feeling that the schools themselves were more cognizant of both needs and solution, we made a group of volunteers available and asked for  direction from the school .  After some discussion concerning our attributes and numbers,
